Health Action Promotion Association (HAPA) is a Tanzanian NGO established in 2000 and formally registered in May 2001[Society No SO 10892]. HAPA seeks to provide support to community initiated efforts that tackle the development of health, education and good governance.

HAPA is a Swahili word meaning "here" or "this place". HAPA builds its foundations on the principle that where you are now, this place, is the essential starting point for facilitating development. HAPA is a value-based, non-profit making, non-partisan organisation.

Volunteers work alongside villagers on community-initiated building projects. Past projects have included health dispensaries, school classrooms, pit latrines, homes for teachers and medical staff. Volunteers live in camp conditions. We aim to cluster volunteers into groups of up to 12 volunteers but you could be the only volunteer in the village at some stage. You'll be fully supported during your time in the villages by HAPA staff backed up by Volunteer Africa. The conditions are tough and most villages we work in do not have electricity or running water.
