Volunteers are an integral and very important part of EdUKaid’s work; with out them all of our other projects would be impossible. They are the most visible expression of our commitment to support education in the area and their diligence and care is an example to all who we work with. Whilst volunteers undertake a number of tasks their main role is to teach. Our main focus is to support the teaching of English in Primary and Secondary schools. English is a vital part of the syllabus at all ages but the most important factor is that whilst Primary lessons are conducted in Swahili all Secondary subjects are taught in English. Therefore, it is crucial that all Secondary pupils have a very strong grasp of English to undertake their studies. Not only this, but there are far greater resources available in English compared to Swahili and English is the language of business, government and tourism in Tanzania. Our volunteers are attached to an existing school where they work with the English teachers in support of the syllabus and also provide additional lessons in the form of English Clubs.
