go back to Kit - what to take This is for anybody that has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro - my friend and i are planning to climb mount kili after our seven week stay in kimbwi village. We'd appreciate any advice on the type of equipment we need to take.
Clothing? Any organisations you recommend? Safety aspects? Specific health requirements? Thank you, jess Hello Jessica,
I posted a little reply under general questions about climbing Kili, I mention you can rent gear in Arusha or Moshi but if you are picky on foot comfort or have tiny feet it might be good to bring your own boots- Nice winter boots you could walk 5 days in, Nike ATG boots might be best, but with work boots in your suitcase it might be a lot to carry. Have fun Dan Hi Jess,
We climbed kili last year with ashante tours - www.ahsantetours.com. they we great and pretty much dragged me the last half hour or so to the top. we planned it from the village and basically turned up in moshi with nothing - nearly everything on the list we needed x by 5 adn this was the day before we were starting) Ahsante sorted us out for gear (very colourful jumpers and knitted balaclavas - dont expect hire shops.. like we did) but i would definately recommend going slightly prepared... boots, decent jacket and gaiters. you should get walking pole there. our season 3 sleeping bags definately didn't do the job and i was slightly nervous when it was 7am on the day we started and i was still walking around the tour office in thongs hoping they would come up with some boots...having said that though, i wouldn't go all out taking stuff... anyways, definately do it. although i was cursing everyone and everthing on summit night - including myself for actually paying money to get myself up some mountain, freezing and absolutely knackered.. it was definately best thing ever done. saw some amazing stuff and had a great time with the other volunteers who went up. have a great time.. tanzania is amazing. i think about the village all the time - in fact have photo of soem of the kids from the village at my desk. there smiles make your day over and over.... def have to see more of africa one day oh adn it you have time - even a few days - you have to go to zanzibar. we were paying something like $13 dollars a night to stay in absolute paradise... we couldnt' believe our luck when the bus stopped outside the place... you will save a few $ on the ferry across if you show your visa exemption - and pay as a resident. a good $40 or so dollars return which does nicely for cocktails on the beach... kate |
