About Volunteer Africa

Volunteer Africa is an international 'not for profit' organisation that is run by a team of volunteers spread around the world. Volunteer Africa has been established to give people the opportunity to work on community initiated projects in developing countries. In return for hosting these international volunteers the host organisation receives donations from the volunteers.

Volunteer Africa is a charity registered in England and Wales (registration number 1097963). Our background can be checked with the Charity Commission and Companies House in the UK.

The first projects took place in Tanzania during 2002 in Singida region.

The Lead Co-ordinator for Volunteer Africa is Simon Headington, the founder and former Director of Health Projects Abroad. Simon's first voluntary work abroad was as an 18 year old. Later he worked for Operation Raleigh for four years. Most of this time he was based in London though he also took part in expeditions in Honduras, Borneo and Cameroon. Simon set up Health Projects Abroad in 1989 and ran the organisation until January 2000. He is now running an Internet based recruitment advertising company for healthcare workers.

The Support Co-ordinator is Moya Cutts. Moya's overseas volunteering began in Thailand on a gap-year between school and university. After completing her degree Moya worked for Project Trust for two years at their base on the Isle of Coll. Another course, more voluntary work and then two years as Volunteer Co-ordinator for Health Projects Abroad and 6 months as Office Manager for i-to-i means that Moya has a wealth of experience to share. Moya is currently based in New Zealand and can be contacted at moya at volunteerafrica.org
