Potential of Terrorism in Tanzania

We want to bring to your attention the official advice regarding terrorism in Tanzania. This advice comes from the British and US governments. It is not meant to scare you or to put you off going to Tanzania but you should be aware of the risks in certain regions of Tanzania and follow the advice given. The world is a risky place all round at present both at home and overseas.

Terrorism in Tanzania is of concern to VolunteerAfrica and all our volunteers. Volunteers will spend their first week in Dar es Salaam but the majority of their time at the projects twenty-four hours up-country in the rural Singida region, which is well off the main tourist routes. Volunteers will be at less risk in Singida than in Dar es Salaam or other more touristy areas such as Zanzibar, which volunteers may wish to visit during travel time after the project.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office believes that Tanzania, including Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, is one of a number of countries in East Africa where there is an increased terrorist threat.

There have been published threats in some Zanzibar newspapers in recent months warning that women who dress immodestly may be subject to harassment. American citizens are advised to dress modestly and to refrain from intemperate public behavior.

The advice is not saying don't go to Tanzania - it is saying that, in line with many countries around the world (including the UK & US), there is a risk and that travellers should be vigilant, particularly when in areas frequented by tourists and foreign nationals.

I repeat this information is not meant to scare you but to make you aware of ways of minimising the risks. As government travel advice is updated regularly, for the most up-to-date information please consult the government websites listed to the right.

The US State Department echoes the British advice stating that U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk of indiscriminate attacks on civilian targets in public places, including tourist sites and other sites where Westerners are known to congregate. At times political tension on Zanzibar and Pemba can be extremely high. U.S. citizens are reminded that violent demonstrations and bombings could recur with little warning. Travelers should maintain a high level of security vigilance at all times and avoid political rallies and related public gatherings because of the potential for violence.
