Child Protection

Volunteer Africa is committed to ensuring that all children involved in our projects are kept safe from all forms of harm and ill-treatment.

To ensure the above, VolunteerAfrica has a formal Child Protection Policy. You can download a copy of this policy here .

Copied below is the "Code of Conduct".

To safeguard the children we work with, all volunteers are properly vetted and briefed on child protection issues. All volunteers taking part in projects involving contact with children must have a check made against the police records in their home country. The procedure varies from country to country and can sometimes be expensive and, in the case of Canada, take six months to get back.

If you have experience of getting these checks done in countries other than the UK, and have suggestions about realistic ways of properly briefing volunteers who are coming from all over the world, then please do let us have your ideas.

If you have any comments or suggestions relating to any of this please add them to the new special discussion forum that is here . Alternatively you can email Susie Tysome on susie at volunteer.org.uk

Do listen to children's views and concerns
Do encourage others to discuss attitudes/behaviour they do not like
Do remember that someone else might misinterpret your actions
Do recognise that caution is required even in sensitive moments, such as when dealing with bullying or bereavement
